For Parents

The NAU e-GIRLS camps provide a unique opportunity for intellectually curious girls from diverse backgrounds to come together in pursuit of academic challenge and scientific growth, within a supportive community built on respect, responsibility, and trust. Over the past three years, 28 girls have attended the camps, with 18 of these attending more than once.

During camp, the girls work in teams of 2 or 3 to investigate forensic science CSI-type scenarios. The forensic sciences cross many of the scientific and technological disciplines, including entomology, toxicology, anatomy, biotechnology (i.e., gel electrophoresis), forensic physics (i.e., ballistics, bloodstain pattern analysis), computer encryption analysis and security auditing, and statistics.

Most importantly, it is our intent to provide campers with hands-on scientific experiences that are exciting, rigorous, and safe. Here’s what a camper’s mother said about her daughter’s experience:

“The experience was incredible. I know my daughter received countless benefits that she won’t realize for years to come. The staff was fabulous. You obviously spent a great deal of time planning the program. It was all so impressive to me. Thank you also for making me feel comfortable sending her so far away for the first time!”

We strongly recommend that you take time with your daughter to review the information about the camp experience, including our guidelines and procedures, in the e-GIRLS Parent/Student Handbook (See the link below) prior to arrival.

We will be gathering information about the quality of the experience and the girls’ attitudes toward the sciences to include in the program evaluation reports that we provide to our funders. In order to comply with Northern Arizona University’s policies regarding the protection of human subjects, we ask that you and your daughter sign our Informed Consent Forms (linked below) and bring these to the camps at registration on Day 1. If you have concerns about this process, please do not hesitate to contact the Project Director via the contact us page.

(You will need adobe acrobat to view this forms, if you do not have it please visit www.adobe.com to download the program for free)
